ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Laura Jean Coglon graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Nursing in 1951 and studied with Carlton Ball, Ruth Duckworth, and the Edmonton Potters’ Guild in a series of 2-6 week programs at the Banff School of Fine Arts (now the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity). At the University of Alberta, she met Dr. Russell (Russ) Coglon, and they married in 1954. For the next four decades, before Russ's passing in 1993, they raised three children in Edmonton, made many friends, and travelled the world, including favourite trips to Ireland, Italy, and Turkey. She pursued her love of nature, and passed it on to her family, through both travel and artmaking. Coglon found artistic outlets in weaving, watercolour painting, and pottery. Two of her porcelain vessels are held in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
