| OTHER HOLDINGS: | Stamp, Arlene | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Arlene Stamp works in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and computer technology. She is noted for her mathematical abstract paintings, and her work is often based on complex mathematical formulas and recursive pattern theories.
Stamp studied mathematics, graduating with a BA from the University of Western Ontario in 1960. This background influenced her study and practice of art, first at the Alberta College of Art and Design, and then at the University of Calgary where she received her BFA in painting in 1979.
Since the 1980s, Stamp’s work has been grounded in logic and pattern, and shows a tendency towards social ordering, geometry, and minimalism. She has worked with non-periodic patterns both in her art practice and in her subsequent design work for StudioStampa, a company she co-founded with Rina Greer, that creates recursive, non-repeating designs and works with manufacturers to produce products for interior and exterior spaces. Two public works based on non-periodic patterns can be found in Toronto at the Sheppard West Subway Station, and in the collection of the TD Centre downtown.
Stamp has often worked collaboratively with other artists on installations and site-specific pieces beyond the gallery. Her work has been exhibited widely, including solo and group shows at the Power Plant in Toronto, Nickle Arts Museum, the Glenbow Museum, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. She currently resides in Sooke, BC.
