ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Charles Breth was born in New York. He attended the University of California – Berkeley after travelling and living in France. He earned a BA in art and anthropology (1969) and an MA in sculpture (1971). He worked for a time instructing photography, pottery and ceramics classes in association with the University of California, before immigrating to Canada in 1972. Breth settled north of Edson, Alberta and worked for several years as a carpenter, building his own home and studio and raising a family. In 1993, Breth earned an MFA in ceramics from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He has held residencies with the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana; with the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program in Roswell, New Mexico; and with the Banff Centre. In 1996, he received a merit award from the San Angelo National Ceramic Competition in San Angelo, Texas and, in 1993, the Edith Fergus Gilmore Award from Ohio State University. He is known for his use of coil, slab and pinch pot processes, and his works are inspired by the mythology and techniques of Greek and Roman antiquity. Breth has practiced as a sculptor and ceramic artist since the 1970s and has been a guest lecturer and taught at the University of Alberta and Ohio State University. He was the Head of Ceramics and Sculpture at Malaspina University College in Nanaimo, British Columbia and Head of the Ceramics Department at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. His works have been exhibited throughout North America. Breth lives and works on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Compiled 2014
