| OTHER HOLDINGS: | Benn, Robert | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Rob Benn is an artist, and now entrepreneur, living in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He completed his BFA in Printmaking at the University of Calgary in 1980. His earlier works comprised mostly black and white ink drawings on rag paper, and watercolours. His primary subjects were scenes of nature, such as the silhouette of Mount Assiniboine, or tangled tree roots; or agricultural landscapes (snow, farmers’ fields and fences). He strives for a balance between simplicity and complexity, stylized patterns and detail, proximity and distance. He aims to capture a sense of dynamic energy in a world of constant change.
Benn has also created portraits, depicting a complex being at a particular moment, and surreal concepts – acrylic paintings or ink drawings he calls “Mindscapes”.
In addition, he has turned his attention to consulting and coaching work, with the aim of promoting a positive culture of collaboration and engagement. These projects seek to encourage social well-being via creative visual thinking, which Benn feels should be part of every person’s life. Benn is a Charter Member and Past-President of the International Forum of Visual Practitioners. This diverse group of professionals employ various tools and methods – custom visuals, diagrams, illustrations, storyboards, visual agendas, mapping systems, images, icons, drawings and multi-media – to capture information, communicate ideas and stimulate creative thinking.
He has had solo exhibits at the Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton and at the then-Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery. Collections of his work can be found at the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, at Kristan Lang Prints, Calgary; at the Energy Resources Conservation Board Office Collection and at Birks Jewellery, Calgary; and in various private collections. |
