ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Eva Bartel was born in the UK and came to Toronto as a small child. She earned Bachelors degrees in Environmental Studies (Waterloo) and in Architecture (Carleton University) in the 1970s. Her career in the visual arts spans architecture, urban design, industrial and interior design, graphic design, painting, drawing and photography, all areas in which she has won awards. Eva settled in Edmonton in 1977, eventually becoming a partner in Dub Architects Ltd with her husband Gene Dub. She won various awards for her achievements in architecture, including the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) 75th Anniversary Award for Architectural Excellence. Since leaving architecture, after 25 years of practice, she has devoted herself to watercolour painting. She is especially interested in the landscape of Alberta, as both a skier and hiker, as well as a painter, and has depicted the open spaces, wide skies and ski trails near Edmonton. With more free time, she now calls herself a travel artist, combining nature and art and journeys in a motorhome in the US and all across Canada. She has embraced plein air painting on location – these works are created quickly, whether outside or viewed from the motorhome window. These small paintings seek to capture colour, light and the motion of water. Eva Bartel became a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour in 2010. Her painting series include Canadian Water and Volcano (comprising views of Yellowstone National Park, Washington State and Hawaii). “Smith River, Northern California” was selected for the CSPWC’s Mexico City 1st International Watercolor Exhibit in 2015.
