| ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Daniel Dugas is a poet, musician and videographer. He received a BFA from the University of Moncton (1986), an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1993), and a PhD from the University of Moncton (2016). His videographic work has always been intimately linked to poetry. For the ancient Greeks, creative activity was a fusion of poetry and action. Similarly, his creative process—of video making and the poetic experience—is based on a relational exchange. He explores the rapport between content/container and materiality/immateriality, how text and image exist on the same plane, and how these seemingly opposite elements interact to create new symbols, icons, and meanings.
Dugas has served as an instructor at the Alberta College of Art and Design, an instructor and Writer in Residence at the University of Moncton, and as a Visiting Scholar at the Sydney College of the Arts in Australia. He has exhibited work in solo and group shows in North America, Europe, Mexico, and Australia, and participated in residencies hosted by the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, Everglades AIRIE (Florida), Deering Estate (Florida), and Australia Poetry (Sydney). He has given numerous readings, artist talks, academic presentations in Canada, the United States, and Europe. His work has been consistently supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and artsnb (Arts Funding New Brunswick). His film Insomnie (2012) was a finalist at the 6th edition of La parola immaginata film festival in Treviglio, Italy, and his ninth book of poetry, L’Esprit du temps/The Spirit of the Time (2015, Éditions Prise de parole) won the 2016 Prix littéraire Antonine-Maillet-Acadie Vie.
