ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Judy Cheung’s work explores issues of consumerism, globalization and homogeneity, using media such as film, video, text, sound and teleconferencing. A versatile artist, between 1983 and 1987, she studied photography, theatre, literature, dance, film criticism and video. Her studies included a BFA in Painting and Photography (1987) from the University of Calgary. She later earned an MFA from the Pratt Institute in New York in 1992. Her art-making has involved a continuous inquiry into urban human activity, evoked through transitory moments, such as travel. She explores the idea of a ‘non-place’ and a ‘non-view’ that informs our modern existence. Love is in the Air – skyLink was an installation first held at Latitude 53, Edmonton, in 2003, again based on travel, consumerism and the objects with which we surround ourselves to create a sense of security. This work was showcased in the 9th Havana Biennial in 2006. Mind of a City was part of Edmonton’s The Works festival of 2008, and became part of a collection of essays published by Latitude 53. This was one of Cheung’s interactive installations, taking viewers on a journey as they navigated “self-help” instructions. The collaborative experience explored the codes of social dynamics, isolation and the disruption of community. The installation freeLink, held at the Surrey Art Gallery (2006) again explored the travel phenomenon. The installation simulated a global highway, blending data from real and fictional spaces, and taking visitors to different locations at the speed of light. This sensory and experiential journey examined social aspirations for freedom and mobility, speed and security. Over the years, Judy has been active as a curator, writer, and as a teacher of photography in various Canadian cities. She has exhibited across Canada, the US, Europe and Asia.
