ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Marna Bunnell is an artist, designer, curator and educator living in both Edmonton, Alberta and Puebla, Mexico. Her art projects utilize a variety of media, are community-based and are intended to challenge or question social and political ideas of contemporary life. Her work has been recognized with several honours in Mexico and Canada. Her graphic design and print work won first prize in the Social / Ideological / Political category at the 3rd International Biennial of Posters in Mexico, a bronze medal in the 18th Biennial of Graphic Design in Brno, Czech Republic and first prize in the 4th International Biennial of Print in Seoul, South Korea. Bunnell’s work is exhibited in Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America and Asia and held in public collections such as the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul, South Korea and the Sauza Canada Collection in Guadalajara, Mexico. Marna Bunnell was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She completed Scholarship Studies in Piano at the Banff Centre for the Arts (1974), a BA in music performance (piano, 1979) and a BFA in painting, graphic design and printmaking (1983) from the University of Alberta. She has also undertaken postgraduate studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, Mexico and holds an MFA in printmaking and graphic design (1996) from the University of Alberta. She has been a participant in the Canada-Mexico Artist Residency Program and completed several residencies at the Banff Centre. Bunnell is a prolific speaker and lecturer, presenting often on her work as it deals with social justice issues around prostitution, gender and power. Compiled 2014
