ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Printmaker and painter Christine Koch was born in Edmonton, and since 1987 has been a resident of St. John’s, Newfoundland. She earned her BA Honours in English Literature at the University of Alberta (1981), took Foundation Studies at the Ontario College of Art in Ontario (1982), her MA in English Literature at the University of Toronto (1982), and her BFA in Art and Design at the University of Alberta (1986). She also took workshops at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts (1987), St. Michael’s Printshop in St. John’s, NL (1989), and the Emma Lake Artists’ Colony, SK (1991). Koch undertook several residencies, including at the Experimental Etching Studio during the Boston Printmaking Symposium (1997), Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland, and the Department of Geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s. Koch has mounted several solo exhibitions, including The River God Suite at Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John’s, NL, Outside and Inside at Kelowna Art Gallery, and Tablelands at Studio 21 in Halifax, NB. She has also participated in dozens of group exhibitions, including Images of Newfoundland at Franklyn Gallery in Saskatoon, SK The Tenth Anniversary Show at McMullen Gallery in Edmonton, and Black and White at the New Bedford Art Museum in Massachusetts. More than a dozen corporate, private, and public collections house Koch’s work, including those of the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador in St. John’s, NL, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, and the Canada Council Art Bank. Koch has received numerous project grants from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council and the Canada/Newfoundland Cooperation Agreement on Cultural Industries, among other agencies. She’s also been a member of several organisations including Canadian Artists’ Representation, Harcourt House Art Gallery in Edmonton, and Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador.
