ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Evelyn Carter belongs to the Little Red River Cree Nation near Fort Vermillion in Treaty 8 territory. She is of Cree and European ancestry. As an artist of indigenous descent with an interest in exploring the self and identity, she avoids any stereotypical imagery in respect for herself, her people and their traditional and spiritual teachings. Carter’s practice has included large-scale paintings, small-scale collage works and more recently, writing, drawing, fibre arts and photography, while focusing on her growing family. Carter’s formal training includes graduating from the Visual Arts program at Edmonton’s Grant MacEwan College in 1993 and from the University of Alberta with a BFA in 1999. She has been exhibiting her work in galleries since she was a teen and has taught and mentored other artists, which has greatly enriched her practice. Carter currently lives in Wetaskiwin, AB with her husband and children. She works from her home studio.
