ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Calgary-based artist Tivadar Boté was born in Szekszard, Hungary in 1956. He immigrated to Canada in 1963, his father having left Hungary during the 1956 Revolution. He holds a Bachelor of Design in visual communications (1997) and a Diploma in Visual Communications with Distinction (1992) from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, as well as a BEd in art (1980) from the University of Calgary. From 1985 to 1986, he also attended the Yoshida Hanga Academy, a traditional woodblock printing institute, in Tokyo, Japan. His work has been heavily influenced by the time he has spent studying in Japan and travelling throughout Europe and Central and South America.
Boté exhibits his abstract painting and illustration work in Calgary and has participated in shows in Winnipeg and in Washington, DC. In 1993, he received the Bronze Medal at the Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators National Awards Show in Toronto. Boté has worked as an instructor in design and illustration for the Alberta College of Art and Design and is an accomplished freelance digital illustrator for established publications and non-profit and corporate clients in Canada and the United States. He was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to design a series of gold and silver coins —minted in 2013 — that celebrate Canadian wildlife.
