ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Gerald Hewko is a self-taught photographer with 46 years of experience working in traditional film and modern digital techniques. He makes silver gelatin, salt, platinum-palladium and wet plate collodion Ambrotype photographs in traditional darkrooms. Hewko’s work consists of social documentary in nature, telling the stories of my subjects in a truthful honest way with compassion and empathy. He prefers to spend as much time as he can with the people he photographs, trying to learn and understand their lives before making photographs, then to return year after year to continue to tell their stories. Hewko believes that photography can be a powerful force for good in the world and that it can directly help the people in the photographs.
