Stewart Steinhauer is Cree and was born at Saddle Lake First Nation in northeastern Alberta. He is a self-taught artist. Stewart began carving in 1973 after the birth of his first child. He has continued to learn and grow as an artist and, in 1991, he held his first professional exhibition. In the same year he made the move to dedicate his life to full-time sculpting.
Steinhauer uses a "direct" method of carving, using natural stone and listening to the stone spirit as his source of inspiration.
