| ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Carrie Wheeler is an artist who was born in Fort Saskatchewan and currently lives and works in Edmonton, Alberta. Wheeler started as a painter when she was 14 and began working with clay in 2011 when she joined the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts (the Nina), an art studio that supports artists with developmental disabilities. She enjoys the tactile nature of sculpture and the ability to bring her ideas to life in three dimensions.
Wheeler finds inspiration for her ceramic work through her imagination and dreams. Her work is often abstract, whimsical, and ornate, and her love of art comes from her grandmother, who left her oil paints to Wheeler upon her passing.
Her experience at the Nina has allowed her to connect with the community, and grow as an artist. Wheeler gives back to the community at the Farmers Market and by volunteering at events on Alberta Avenue. She says it allows her to meet other artists and gives her a connection to other people. Sharing her art with the world is important to Wheeler. She sells her work at the Nina, TIX on the Square Gift Shop, and at the Capilano Farmers Market. She also participates in many art walks and sales in Edmonton throughout the year.
