William Buster Residence
Edmonton
Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
The William Buster Residence is a two-and-one-half-storey, Craftsman influenced building with a front-facing open gable roof, clapboard siding transitioning to shingles on the upper storeys and a half-width open verandah. It is located on a single residential lot, mid block in the neighbourhood of Garneau.
Heritage Value
The William Buster Residence is significant for its association with early residential development in Garneau and its Craftsman influenced design.
Southside neighbourhoods, and particularly Garneau, experienced an enhanced period of economic and residential growth in 1911 and 1912 as a result of the ongoing development of the University of Alberta and the opening of the High Level Bridge. Constructed in 1912, the William Buster Residence is a good example of the housing built in Garneau during this period.
The William Buster Residence is also significant for its Craftsman influenced design. At the time it was constructed, the Craftsman style had gained popularity across North America and it was a favoured style amongst middle class Edmontonians who wanted a modest but durable and well designed house.
