HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE
Now the oldest school building still standing in Medicine Hat, Montreal Street school was on of nice schools established in the city by World War I.   It was constructed of local brick in 1904, during a period of sudden population growth in the “Flats” area of the settlement.   As often occurred across the Prairies during the influenza epidemic of 1918, the modern facilities of Montreal Street school also served briefly as a hospital.   Upgraded numerous times over the ensuing decades, the school continued to serve its community until quite recently.   Its significance to the city’s history is further enhanced by the fact that it is almost the only public building remaining from the earliest years of settlement in the district.
