Pearson fonds | | CREATOR: | Pearson, Hugh E. | | DATE RANGE: | Copied 1979 | | EXTENT: | 40 negatives | | ADMINISTRATIVE | | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Hugh Edward Pearson was October 17, 1887 in Minnedosa, Manitoba; he was the son of Frank and Edith Pearson. In the spring of 1906, he joined a survey party headed by L.T. Bray, of the Dominion Land Survey, at Macleod, Alberta; he subsequently surveyed with J.L. Côté. He received his commission as a Dominion Land Surveyor on March 25th, 1912. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, and was discharged with the rank of captain; he was awarded the Military Cross for his service. Hugh married Constance Jukes Sanders, a volunteer nurse originally from Alberta, on November 16th, 1918 in England. After returning to Canada, Hugh continued to work as a surveyor, now a partner in the Côté, Tremblay and Pearson firm, until resigning in 1925. In 1925, he became an active partner in the Radio Supply Company Limited in Edmonton, Alberta with friend Jim M. Taylor; Jim and Hugh subsequently incorporated a company under the Companies Act as Pearson & Taylor Limited on April 28, 1927. Taylor, Pearson & Carson Broadcasting, Limited was incorporated on December 26, 1933; Taylor, Pearson & Carson (Canada) Limited was registered under the Companies Act on May 15, 1950. Hugh was president of Taylor, Pearson & Carson until his retirement in 1960. Until 1970 he was chairman of Selkirk Holdings Limited, which he founded in about 1959. He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada on June 23, 1976. Hugh and Constance had three children: Hugh John Sanders (Sandy), Gerald (Gerry) E. and Constance (Mollie) Margaret (Mackenzie). Hugh E. Pearson died December 26, 1979. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of selected images copied from photographs albums and includes images from a surveying trip around Great Slave Lake in 1922 with images of Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, the boat Northland Echo, canoes, Fort Smith Landing, a First Nations village, tents, Fort Resolution, Souci King Beaulieu, gold mining equipment, the drying of fish, a sawmill, Hudson's Bay Company posts, the Waterways train station; images from a surveying trip in 1923 with images of Largent's Post, Peace River, survey crew, canoes, Fort Fitzgerald, tractors, dogs, Hay River, Fort Simpson, the Stick River, First Nations members, Fort Franklin, camps and an First Nations grave; and miscellaneous images, originally dating from 1912 to about 1919, of a ferry at Athabasca Landing, the J.L.
