ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Located in Township 24, Range 1, West of the 5th Meridian (24-1-W5), the City of Calgary serves a population of 1,019,942. In 1884, the Town of Calgary incorporated pursuant to the provisions of the North-West Municipal Ordinance. In 1894, the Town of Calgary became the City of Calgary. Over the years, the governance of the City of Calgary has altered. Currently, however, a city council composed of a mayor who represents the city, and fourteen aldermen who represent wards of the city govern the City of Calgary. Mayors and alderman hold office for three year terms. All eligible voters elect the mayor, and constituents from the wards elect aldermen. Calgary operates under a council-policy committee system. Council establishes its policies for governing the city based on information provided by four standing policy committees. As members of these committees, aldermen approve and recommend policies to City Council in four main areas: operations and environment, finance, transportation, and community services. Civic committees, boards, and authorities also help to create policies in specialized areas, such as parking, the preservation of heritage sites and buildings, and planning and development matters.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:In 1973, the Glenbow Museum and Archives donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta
