HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dates of Founding and/or Dissolution:
The Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation was established by the Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation Act (S.A. 1991, chapter F-1.8), which was proclaimed September 5, 1991.The Act was repealed by the Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation Act Repeal Act (S.A. 1993, chapter 18), which came into force December 31, 1994.

Functional Responsibility:
The Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation was established as a corporation, and an agent of the crown. The Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation was to strengthen Alberta families through discovery and application of new knowledge about substance abuse. To accomplish this, the Foundation was to support: the development and evaluation of new education and public awareness programs on family life and substance abuse, the development and evaluation of new methods for the treatment of substance abuse, innovative basic and applied research projects on the relationship between family life and substance abuse and other innovative studies in the field of substance abuse, the evaluation of proposed and current programs relating to family life and substance abuse, and the development of an information base on family life and substance abuse in Alberta.

Administrative Relationships:
The administration of the Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation was assigned to Roy Brassard.

Administrative Structure:
The Family Life and Substance Abuse Foundation was comprised of no fewer than three, but no more than eleven trustees appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. One of these members was to be a member of the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. One of the members would be designated chair by the Lieutenant Governor. Beginning November 15, 1993, the Foundation was to consist of one or more trustees appointed by the Lieutenant Governor.
