Prior to 1947, school districts of the Barrhead and Westlock area formed part of Pembina School Division No. 37. In 1947, Pembina School Division No. 37 divided to form Barrhead School Division and Westlock School Division. Barrhead became a County in 1959 while Westlock remained as a school division. The first school district in Swan Hills (Oil Hills School District No. 5109) formed in 1959.
The Division currently maintains 15 community schools, 2 colony schools, a virtual school, and 2 outreach centers. The schools include the Alberta Institute Learning Centre, Fort Assiniboine School, Swan Hills School, Neerlandia School, W.R. Frose School, Hillman Colony School, Sunniebend Colony School, Barrhead Outreach School, Westlock Outreach School, Barrhead Elementary, Busby School, Dapp School, Dunstable School, Meadowview School, Westlock Elementary, Jarvie School, Barrhead Composite School, R.F. Staples School, and Vimy School.
| CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | In 1970, the County of Barrhead donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta on a permanent loan basis. In 2000, the Provincial Archives of Alberta sought to change the status of the records from "permanent loan" to "gift" in order to clearly establish custody and control over the records. However, following the dissolution of the County of Barrhead No. 11 Board of Education in 1995 and the creation of its successor body, the Pembina Hills Regional Division No. 7, the County of Barrhead no longer possessed authority over the records' disposition. In 2002, the Board of Trustees of Pembina Hills Regional Division No. 7 granted gift status to the records. In 2008, Pembina Hills Regional Division No. 7 made a second donation to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of cashbook receipts and expenditures, plans, and daily attendance registers of the following school districts dating from 1919 to 1947:
