ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Latitude 53 Gallery was conceived in 1971/1972 by Harry Savage and Sylvain Voyer as a commercial gallery in Edmonton, Alberta and an alternative to the Edmonton Art Gallery. In 1973, Giuseppe Albi joined the Latitude 53 Gallery Limited (Ltd.) partnership, and the Latitude 53 Gallery opened in October 1973, exhibiting art, paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Along with providing a readily available and central location for more established artists, the Latitude 53 Gallery also assisted young artists to exhibit their works. In 1977, Latitude 53 changed their mandate, becoming a non-profit artist run centre, and Giuseppe Albi became president and first director. Latitude 53 Society of Artists was incorporated under the Societies Act on February 22, 1978. Latitude 53 Society of Artists was an artist run organization that presented quality work of an alternative nature to Edmontonians. In the spring of 1981, the Edmonton Society of Photography approached Latitude 53 about a merger of the two groups; the merger was completed in 1982, and Latitude 53 established a Photography Committee. Latitude 53’s purpose is to encourage contemporary artistic practices and to foster the development and exhibition of experimental art forms.
