Early library services were primarily for the Lieutenant Governor and the members of the Legislative Assembly. The Library served as a parliamentary library, a general reference library for the civil service, and until 1963, as the provincial archives. The purpose of the Provincial Library Archives, known as the Bureau of Archives when first established in 1908, was to preserve all that could be found of the early records and unwritten history of this section of Canada, as well as to preserve all records of current history in the Province. Katherine Hughes, a library employee, was Alberta’s first Provincial Archivist and she undertook considerable work laying the foundations for the Provincial Library Archives Program. The records were initially classified into the following periods: First Period of Regular Trading and Exploration (1775-1821), the Dawn of Settlement (1821-1869), the Foundation Period (1869-1885), the Period of Evolution of Constitutional Government (1885-1905), and Present Day Period (1905-). The Provincial Library Archives Program continued until 1963, when a Provincial Archivist was appointed and a Provincial Archives was formally established under the Provincial Archives Act (S.A. 1966, chapter 73). Following the Legislative Library Operations Review, the Provincial Library was reorganized, and its name was changed to Legislature Library. As a result of this review, in April 1974, Alan Ridge, the Provincial Archivist, and D.B. McDougall, Legislature Librarian, developed a plan to transfer the Legislature Library’s archival records to a more appropriate location, which became known as the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | The records in this collection were originally donated to the Legislature Library Archives Program by a number of different donors. Further custodial history may be gleaned from the operational records of the Legislature Library, which are located in the Legislative Assembly Office fonds in the Legislature Library records series (1906 to 1984). | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Collection consists of both copied and original records and includes records belonging to various companies, associations, governments, and individuals. Fonds includes agendas, Alberta law stamps, association records, banners, calendars, celebration and event programmes, certificates, constitutions, diaries and daily journals, financial records, glass plate negatives, historical and biographical sketches, invitations, judges’ case books, lantern slides and coloured lantern slides, literary manuscripts, maps, mechanically produced photographic reproductions, minutes, negatives and cyanotype negatives, newsletters, newspapers and newspaper clippings, personal reminiscences, phonodiscs, photographs, political party records, prize lists, radio broadcasts and broadcast transcripts, receipts, scrapbooks, shares, souvenir booklets and photograph albums, surveys, temperance posters, and various other miscellaneous records.
The collection has been divided into the following series:

The accessions originally contained an amalgam of records that had, for the most part, been acquired by the Legislature Library as part of its manuscript archives program. Also included were administrative records of the Legislature Library itself. The two accessions were combined to facilitate arrangement and description and all the administrative records of the Legislature Library were moved to accession GR1974.0350 as government records. The remainder of the records were arranged in accession PR1974.0001 as private records.
Because the records in this accession are the accumulated holdings of the Legislature Library Archives, there were a large number of unrelated records. They have been organized, therefore, into series according to creator, subject, and document types. Some records have also been transferred to the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library and to other archival | RELATED RECORDS: | Various other records deposited by the Legislature Library can be found in the Provincial Archives of Alberta holdings. | GENERAL NOTE: | Reference prints of photographs from this collection can be found in A File under location numbers A.2282-A.2283, A.3883-A.3999, A.5351-A.5473, A.17,469-A.17,527, and A.19,007-A.19,030.
