Question Number 140

Hi, I'm hoping someone can tell me why it was historically called "normal school". Where did that name come from? Thanks, Sigrid

A “Normal School” is an obsolete or archaic term for a teacher training institution. It is a literal translation of the French école normale (so called because the first school so named was intended as a model); the term originated about 1830.

There used to be Normal Schools located in Edmonton, Calgary, and Camrose.

The Edmonton Normal School was absorbed by the University of Alberta. The Calgary Normal School evolved into the University of Calgary. The Camrose Normal School simply closed. The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds varying amounts of records from all three of these institutions.
