It is usually best to start by talking to relatives and reviewing any documents in your custody. The more information on specific names, dates, and localities that you have, the easier the research will be.

The CBC has also produced a useful online guide intended for beginners entitled Genealogy 101.

Note that the Provincial Archives of Alberta only holds records for Alberta. If your family is from another Province, it would be necessary to contact the Provincial Archives there.
