Question Number 148

My uncle was convicted of assault sometime between 1939 and 1941. The court proceedings took place either in Sangudo, Onoway or Edmonton. He spent six months in prison (possibly Fort Saskatchewan if it was operating back then) and I would like to know how to obtain details of the court proceedings.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds records from the Court of Queen’s Bench, Criminal Division, for the Judicial District of Edmonton for the time period ca. 1890 – 1960. Both Sangudo and Onoway would be included in the Judicial District of Edmonton. A file list is available (up-to 1949), but these records are not indexed.

The Provincial Archives also holds records for the Fort Saskatchewan Jail from 1902 through 1986.

You are welcome to visit the Provincial Archives in person to review these records; there is no charge to use the facilities.
