Question Number 156

My great-grandfather was convicted of the murder of my great-grandmother and his 4 children in 1921. My grandma was 4 and the only survivor. The family farm was in Innisfail. I am trying to obtain records from his trial, his appeal and his incarceration at the Fort Saskatchewan 1921-?? Jail and move to Alberta Hospital. I am not sure whether it was Edmonton or Ponoka hospital. He was there until the 1950's. He died there.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds some records that may be relevant to your research.

The Provincial Archives holds Court of Queen's Bench records for the Judicial District of Edmonton (which would probably have included Innisfail) for the time period ca. 1900 - ca. 1950.

The Provincial Archives holds records from the Edmonton sitting of the Court of Appeal for the time period 1919 to 1962. Note that the index to these records remains in the custody of the Court of Appeal.

The Provincial Archives holds some prisoner records for the Fort Saskatchewan Jail for the time period 1917 through the early 1970s and some patient records for Alberta Hospital Ponoka for the time period 1904-1935.
