Question Number 188
I would like to find out about the Japanese Immigrant to Alberta, Mr. Anno Makishi. He landed in Canada in 1905 and he settled area north of Lethbridge. How can I find the records of early settlers from Japan? Is there any records kept of immigrants?
The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds only a very small quantity of records relating to Japanese Canadians. We are unable to locate any records relating specifically to Mr. Anno Makishi; he does not appear in either the 1906 or the 1911 census for Alberta.
The Provincial Archives does hold microfilm copies of passenger lists for the West Coast ports of Vancouver and Victoria for the time period 1905 to 1919. Note that these lists are not indexed. The entries are in chronological order by date of arrival. To find a specific individual it would be necessary to know at which port and approximately when someone arrived in Canada.
There is a local archives in Lethbridge that does have some holdings relating to Japanese-Canadians in the area.:
