Question Number 235

I'm doing a research paper about Native art from pre-contact to the present. Pictographs, buffalo hides, beadwork, totem poles etc. are of interest to me. Are there any photos or history books available on this subject?

The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds a few photographs depicting Aboriginal art in various forms. The Royal Alberta Museum, however, has much better holdings of this type of material:

    Royal Alberta Museum
    Ethnology Program
    12845-102 Avenue
    Edmonton, Alberta
    T5N 0M6

    Phone: (780) 453-9153 (Susan Berry)
    Phone: (780) 453-9161 (Ruth McConnell)

Note that totem poles are usually created by the peoples of the North-west Pacific Coast rather than Alberta.
