Question Number 338

My great grandmother was sent to the Alberta Hospital at Ponoka (the Provincial Hospital for the Insane) some time in the 1950's because of her (what we would now know as Alzheimer’s) symptoms. I am researching my family history, and cannot find her death records anywhere. If you can help me find her death record that would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds a register of patients for Ponoka Hospital for the time period 1904-1935 only.

For the 1950s, there are some administrative and operational records (GR1985.0066), but this material includes only scattered references to individual patients. Note that these records are subject to FOIP.

The Provincial Archives also holds civil death registration records for the Town of Ponoka for the time period 1908 to 1970. Note that these records are not indexed; the entries are arranged by date of death.
