Question Number 432

My grandmother died in 1900. Was it necessary at that time to have a death certificate? And if so why cant one be traced for her?

The registration of deaths began in what is now Alberta about 1870, but registration was not complete, especially for rural areas, before about the 1920s. Simply, not everybody bothered to register these vital events with civil authorities.
