Question Number 94

Could you please tell me how I could find information on the wife or wives of a well-known steamboat captain, John S. Segers, who skippered steamers from Athabasca Landing to Fort McMurray at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush? One wife reportedly died in the mid 1870s, the second died in August 1887 at Fort McMurray. Do local cemeteries have lists of people interred there? Or is there some other index of death dates? I need to track down an obituary or other death notice. Unfortunately I don't know the first names of either wife.

There are two published indices to pre-1905 civil registrations of deaths in Alberta. We have checked both volumes, and there are no listings for anyone with the surname SEGERS.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta does not hold any cemetery listings for Fort McMurray. We suggest that you inquire with the local community museum and archives:

    Heritage Park
    1 Tolen Drive
    Fort McMurray, Alberta
    T9H 1G7

    Phone: (780) 791-7575 E-mail: heritage@fortmcmurrayhistory.com

The Alberta Genealogical Society also has a local branch with some unique holdings:

Ft. McMurray Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society
    P.O. Box 6253
    Fort McMurray, Alberta
    T9H 4W1

    Telephone: (780) 791-5663
    E-mail: ftmacgen@telus.net

There was no newspaper published anywhere in Alberta in the 1870's, and there was no local newspaper published in Fort McMurray before 1939.
