ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Isabel Levesque started drawing and painting at the age of two-and-a-half. Levesque was raised in Castor, Alberta and grew up painting the landscapes of her family’s farm. Levesque studied painting at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now Alberta College of Art & Design) from 1945-1947. Shortly after this, she married and moved to Peace River with her partner. Levesque spent approximately 20 years in Peace River, and during this time she raised six children. Despite being very busy, Levesque continued to draw and paint. From 1967-1969 Levesque studied Painting at the Alberta College of Art, and in 1971 she graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education with a major in art. After receiving her degree, Levesque taught for a short time in Edmonton. Country life had always been a significant part of her life, and she ended up specializing in rural Alberta landscapes. Levesque was never interested in making statements with her art; instead, she wanted to convey her appreciation of the countryside. Levesque painted in a representational style, which allowed her capture the realism of the landscape while establishing the feeling of the landscape. Levesque let the subject matter dictate whether she worked with oil, acrylic, and watercolour. Throughout her career, Levesque had the opportunity to study with Walter Phillips, A.Y. Jackson, H.G. Glyde, and Stanford Perrott.
