ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Colour is one of the defining characteristics of abstract painter Richard Chenier’s work. The emotion, the structure and its play on the canvas holds special fascination, as does the way the light strikes the surface of his paintings. This passion for colour leads Richard to take risks and leave it all on the canvas. Using a variety of paint application methods – spraying, staining, knifing and brushing – Richard’s work is dynamic and eye-catching. Playing with orientation, colour choice and spatial relationships, Richard’s bold choices create impressionistic statements that challenge his own and the viewer’s perception of the world.
Born in Edmonton in 1945, Richard earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta in 1969 and his Master of Visual Arts from the same institution in 1972. Richard also taught painting at the University of Alberta. Richard’s work has been shown in exhibitions in Edmonton, Banff, Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Stratford and Kingston, and his paintings are held in numerous private collections. |
