ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Reginald Llewellyn Harvey was born in 1888 in Southampton, England. He studied at the University College, Southampton, the Yarmouth School of Art in Norfolk and at the Regent Street Polytechnic London. After coming to Canada in 1912, he settled in Calgary, where in 1917 he began working with the Calgary school system as a vice-principal and principal, eventually holding the position of Supervisor of Art from 1922 to 1931. He was later in charge of the art department of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, a position he held for over twenty years. He retired to Victoria, BC in 1951, where he continued painting until his death in 1973. A founding member of the Alberta Society of Artists and an associate member of the Manitoba Society of Artists, Harvey worked in oil, pastel and watercolour and was best known for his mountain landscapes of Banff and his coastal views of British Columbia's Gulf Islands. He showed his work widely, including in an exhibition in 1943 of forty watercolours that toured through Alberta and British Columbia. He was later included in exhibitions organized by the National Gallery in Ottawa, the Montreal Society of Artists, the Ontario Society of Artists among many others. His work is represented in public and private collections in Canada, the US, Great Britain, South Africa and New Zealand.
