ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Eileen Taylor loved both fabrics and ceramics, and luckily for the Alberta art community, she didn’t have to choose. Exceptionally talented in both areas, Eileen is a celebrated Batik artist and sculptor. Born in Taber, Alberta, Eileen decided to leave her career as a teacher and return to school full time to pursue her passion for art. She received her Diploma from the Alberta College of Art in 1967. In addition to pursuing her own artwork, Eileen also taught Batik, block printing and silkscreen fabric printing at the Alberta College of Art and taught workshops for the Government of Alberta and led a variety of children’s art classes. Eileen was also a member of the Canada Craft Council and the Advisory Council to the Alberta College of Art. A naturally creative person, Eileen called herself “a compulsive maker of ideas.” She always needed to be creating, whether it was Batik, photography or sculpting small Spirit Houses. Her pieces were an expression of ideas, and form, colour and technique are the tools Eileen used to convey her message. Eileen wanted to increase her own awareness of the world around her as much as she wanted to do the same for the viewer. Eileen’s pieces have been exhibited across Canada. Her pieces reside in numerous collections, including the Jean A. Chalmers National Craft Collection, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Imperial Oil Edmonton, the Edmonton Club, Winston Churchill Law Court, Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and the Glencoe Club, as well as a number of private collections. Eileen passed away in November of 1999.
