ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Born in Belgium, multi-talented artist, Lucien Compernol studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Roeselare in Belgium before coming to Canada in 1959. He then trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montreal. In addition to pursuing his own work, Lucien taught at the Valley School of Fine Arts in North Gower, Ontario; the College de Montreal; the Carigan School Board in Sorel, Quebec; the Alberta College of Art; and the University of Calgary. Defying classification, Lucien is committed to staying true to himself and going where the art takes him instead of following any particular trend. Influenced by nature, his prints are an attempt to uncover eternal truths and reach beyond what is visible. While technique is important, Lucien ensures it does not get in the way of his message. The use of tonal transitions of black, white and the shades in between creates rich texture, depth and drama. Lucien’s work has been shown in Calgary, Banff, Saskatoon, Montreal, Hamilton, Toronto, New Hampshire, Monte-Carlo, Monaco, Manchester, and in Belgium. Some of his pieces reside in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Imperial Oil, the Kresge Collection, Atelier Libre 848, the University of Calgary, the Royal Library Albert 1, TD Bank, the Emiel Vorhaeren Museum, as well as a number of private collections.
