ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Albert Borch received his BFA with Distinction (crafts, 1955) and his MFA with High Distinction (ceramics, 1961) from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. Over the years he would study art and bookbinding at the San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, the State University of Iowa, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Oregon College of Education, Penland School in North Carolina and at Pendle Hill in Pennsylvania. He has worked as an art instructor at the high school and university level for several schools, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Red Deer College. He taught ceramics and bookbinding at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) beginning in 1968. He became Chair of the Ceramics Department at ACAD in 1975 and Lecturer Emeritus in 1999.
Borch makes functional pottery and sculptural ceramics and is a bookbinder. His work has been frequently presented in exhibitions across the United States and in Canada. He was also included in the Canadian Book Binders and Book Artists Guild’s Contemporary Canadian Bookworks, a juried exhibition at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. He owned and operated a ceramics studio and gallery in Harper Court in Chicago and a pottery supply store, studio and gallery in Salem, Oregon.
Borch was born during the Great Depression in Fort Dodge, Iowa. His parents were Danish immigrants. Albert meet his wife, Ingrid, on a trip to Denmark, and they have two children. Borch and his wife live in Kelowna, British Columbia.
