| ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | George Wood is a painter whose portrays interior scenes and representational still lifes. He is interested in the connection between people and objects, and the relationship between the passage of time and these personal objects. In addition to painting in both acrylic and oils, he is also a sculptor.
George Wood studied painting with Illingworth Kerr, Marion Nicoll, Stanford Perrott, and Luke Lindoe at the Alberta College of Art and Design in the 1950’s, and then studied sculpture under Cecil Richards at the University of Manitoba. After working as a preparator and curator at both the Glenbow Museum and the Alberta College of Art and Design in the 1960’s, Wood became an instructor of painting, composition, and design at the college and later, an academic supervisor at the same institution.
Wood's work has been exhibited throughout Canada and in the United States, and is represented in the collections of the Mendel Art Gallery (now Remai Modern) in Saskatoon, the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum in Charlottetown, the Art Gallery of Sarnia, University of Saskatchewan, Memorial University in Newfoundland, Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, the Alberta College of Art and Design, and McMaster University in Hamilton. George Wood lives in Calgary, Alberta.
