ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Duncan Lindsay spent over thirty years working as a glassblower at the University of Calgary. He was a passionate photographer with a wide variety of creative interests, and approached it all with an inveterate, do-it-yourself attitude. Lindsay purchased his first camera, a Brownie, on the way home from a visit with his parents to the Calgary Stampede. He combined his love of photography with the landscape in which he grew up, and told the story of his home province in striking black and white photographs. Lindsay was enamoured by the dynamic and lively quality inherent in photography, and how photographs could invoke feelings of nostalgia, warmth, longing, and loneliness. Duncan Lindsay never left home without his camera, and continuously explored all aspects of photography throughout his life. His skill and interest in the technical and mechanical workings of the camera allowed him to experiment with all kinds of equipment and photographic techniques. He was a lifelong learner and made the transition to digital photography with ease when he was in his 70’s and 80’s and began playing with colour photography as a new form of expression. Although Lindsay didn’t pursue photography as a career, he did exhibit his images in the early 70’s at the University of Calgary Art Gallery and at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary.
