ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Lee Beames is a western Canadian artist who has lived in Alberta for most of her life. She studied at the Alberta College of Art, the Banff School of Fine Art, Red Deer College, the University of Alberta and the Det Denske Selskab Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. Beames’ batik soft sculpture works have exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around Alberta, including by invitation at the Canadian Craft Council Show (Banff, 1975) as well as at the Peter Whyte Gallery in Banff and the Mount Royal College Gallery in Calgary. In addition to various other public collections, her art is also represented in the collections of the Edmonton Law Courts, the Citadel Theatre and the Government of Alberta Beames taught batik at Red Deer College and has instructed workshops in both Alberta and the Northwest Territories. She also implemented an arts-based play therapy program for pediatric patients at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary and taught arts and crafts to preschool-aged children at Calgary’s Allied Arts Centre. Beames was a member of the Canadian Council of Crafts and a founding member of the Commonwealth Sculpture Symposium Society, which created a permanent collection for the city of Edmonton to commemorate the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
