ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Hendrik Bres was born in The Hague, Netherlands and came to Alberta in 1960. Bres’ landscapes are influenced by post-impressionist and modernist painting and are not of particular locations but rather contain a compilation of elements that evoke Alberta scenes. Bres attended the Technical Academy in The Hague but describes himself as largely self-taught as a painter. He did study drawing and printmaking at the Department of Extension at the University of Alberta and attended the Emma Lake Workshops, as well as workshops at the Leighton Centre. Bres has participated in solo and group exhibitions in western Canada and Toronto beginning in 1971. In 1985, he participated in Edmonton Artists for International Development, hosted by the Canadian Hunger Foundation. His work can be found in North American corporate and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the City of Edmonton. Bres worked in printing services for the University of Alberta for over thirty years. He was a long-time member of the Edmonton Contemporary Artists’ Society and the Alberta Society of Artists.
