ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Andie Wicherts was a printmaker and painter whose art was influenced by her background growing up in Europe during the Second World War. She created collages of her wartime memories and the liberation of Holland, and was influenced greatly by the lessons given to her by her mother, who taught her about observing both the natural and the inherited world. As such, whimsical materials such as wasp nests and empty pill capsules sometimes find their way into her art. Wicherts received her diploma in textile design in Amsterdam, and worked as a costume designer in Calgary over the years. Her connection to textiles found its way into her artwork, where she would often weave threads and objects into the paper. Wicherts immigrated to Canada in 1966, and decided to attend university at age 40, receiving her BFA in Printmaking and Drawing from the University of Calgary in 1977. Shortly after graduation, she co-founded Station Studio, the first formal printmaking studio in Calgary, and also became a founding member of the Alberta Printmaker’s Society. She was President of the Alberta Society of Artists, and in 1998, was awarded the Immigrant of Distinction Award for the Arts in Calgary. Wicherts exhibited her work regularly throughout Western Canada, and her work can be found in mamy corporate collections including Pan Canadian Oil Company, the Trans Canada Pipeline, Canadian National Railways in Montreal, and the Canada Council Art Bank. She passed away in Calgary in 2019.
