ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Liv Pedersen creates woven fibre tapestries. She works on a primitive plank loom and weaves vivid and colourful narratives that combine a sophisticated yet elemental visual style. They are best characterized as small-scale, colourful, and often humorous. She depicts domestic scenes from her own life, and often incorporates people in social situations. The texture inherent in the work invites touching, and the tactile process of weaving in itself becomes a form of meditation. The process of weaving also becomes integral to the manner in which Pedersen tells her stories, as the physical process of her art begins at the bottom. Her narratives then, move upwards, similar to a plant growing and unfolding at the top. In contrast, the lower part of her weavings often represents the earth or the foundation of the story. Pedersen trained as a social worker in Denmark, and received her Diploma in Painting from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1978. She worked for over 26 years with the Catholic School Board, supporting children with special education needs. Pedersen is a member of the Alberta Society of Artists, the Alberta Crafts Council, and the Canadian Tapestry Network. Her weavings have been featured in national and international exhibitions, most notably the 8th International Fibre Art Biennial in Nantong, China, and at the New Hampshire USA Institute of Art exhibit The Art is the Cloth. She continues to live and weave in Calgary.
