ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Brenda Malkinson is a glass artist, wood cut print artist, and educator. She is recognized for her large-scale contemporary glass installations, on which she paints with vitrified glass stains and enamels. She draws inspiration from light and colour in the natural world, and explores various natural forms, integrating fragments of foliage, ancient iconography, colour gradations, and patterns in her works. Malkinson also works with woodblock prints and watercolours, which are deep with subtle colour, and include natural elements, suspended objects, and fragmented forms. Her prints, like her glass art, include reflections, shadows, colour, and illuminations. She continuously explores colour and light, transparency and luminosity, in any medium she uses. Malkinson has executed major architectural commissions around the country, including over 70 public and private glass commissions. Her work encompasses innovative glass methods that extend the limits of the traditional stained-glass technique. Her work is in many public and private collections including the Massey Foundation in Ottawa, the University of Alberta, the High Level Airport, the Stanley Milner Public Library, and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. Malkinson has been an instructor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension for over 23 years, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Alberta Craft Council, and the Society of Northern Alberta Print Artists. She is a recipient of the 2013 Edmonton Artists Trust Fund, and the 2018 ACAD Alumni Legacy Award.
