ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dawna Dey Harrish learned to sew in childhood, at school and from family, and trained in Tailoring & Dressmaking at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (1982-1983) before pursuing regular and continuing education in quilting and fibre art. Once she had learned the traditional quilting methods she felt the need to change the design or the layout somehow in order to experiment and make the work ‘her own’. Dey Harrish works with a variety of non-traditional materials, including silk, denim, ultra suede, cotton, linen, and canvas, and she often quilts with metallic thread. She further expands the idea of quilts as an art medium by printing digital images onto fabric and then enhancing them with paint, stitch, and quilting. Dey Harrish has held membership with the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters, Edmonton & District Quilters Guild, Fibre Art Network of Professional Fibre Artists of Western Canada, Canadian Quilters’ Association, Red Deer & District Allied Arts Council, and Alberta Crafts Council. Her quilts have won numerous prizes, including First Place at the St. Albert Old Time Fair (1998), Second and Third Place in the category of Large Wall Quilts at the Saskatchewan Quilt Show (2000), and Second Place Overall at the Spruce Meadows Quilt Competition (2000). She has participated regularly in juried shows and competitions in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and the Filamenta Quilting Collective, of which she is a founding member, has exhibited her fine art quilts in over 30 gallery shows across Western Canada.
