ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Weaver Whynona Yates was born in Leicester, England in 1926 and came to Canada in 1946, eventually settling in Edmonton, Alberta in 1954. She returned to England for a time to attend the Brighton College of Art and the Royal College of Art. She also studied with a variety of tutors and attended numerous workshops. Eager and excited to pass on her knowledge, Whynona taught at the University of Alberta and for the Government of Alberta as well as for private workshops. She was also a member of the Canadian Weaving Guild and the Edmonton Weaving Guild. Patient and steady and with impeccable technique, Whynona was devoted to her craft, at times even making and weaving her own wool. Working on a drawloom gave her great freedom to design and create as she went, creating incredible, colourful and beautiful wall hangings. Whynona’s work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Alberta and in Saskatchewan and England. Some of her pieces reside in the collections of the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa, the National Gallery, the Faculty Club at the University of Alberta as well as private collections in Canada, the United States and England. Whynona passed away in November of 1998.
