ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Marianne Corless holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Victoria (1994), a Diploma from the Victoria College of Art (2001), and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary (2006), where she taught in the Art Department from 2007 - 2014. Her primary exposure to Canadian history was in junior high school – a time when history’s relevance to personal experience is hard to grasp. As an adult, she has sought to re-learn Canadian history, but this time in connection with the events that make up her personal history, a connection that brings a sense of ownership and a range of emotions. Her mixed media textile work, which often incorporates furs and blankets (talismans of trade in Canada’s earliest years), explores issues of national history and identity. More recently, Corless has used mink fur, the epitome of luxury and femininity, as well as a potent symbol of the male/female relationship, to investigate feminine identity through portraiture of women in her daily life. Since 2003, her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and in New York, including at The New Gallery, AB, Museé Régional de Rimouski, QC, the Kelowna Art Gallery, BC, Esplanade Gallery, AB, Toronto Harbourfront Centre, ON, Gallery 265, NY, and in an online exhibition curated by Daina Warren on the occasion of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC. Her work has been supported by the British Columbia Arts Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and is held in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, as well as in private collections across Canada. Corless lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
