He graduated from Grant MacEwan College (Edmonton, AB) in Digital Arts & Media in 2003, after completing a program in Graphics Communications at NAIT in 2001. He is one of Alberta’s most accomplished emerging, contemporary Indigenous visual artists, celebrated for both his paintings and carvings. Carter had a solo show at Alberta House on Alberta Day at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and has had several public shows at major venues including the Royal Alberta Museum and Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton, AB); Art Gallery of Calgary; and Indian and Northern Affairs Public Art Display in Ottawa, Ontario. Jason illustrated his first children’s book, WHO IS BOO: The Terrific Tales of One Trickster Rabbit, inspired by his first carving of a rabbit which he called ‘Nanabozho’ (based on the Ojibwe trickster character). Since then, WHO IS BOO 2: The Continued Adventures and WHO IS BOO 3 have been published. He completed an 18-painting series for the Art Gallery of Alberta part of the AFA’s Travelling Exhibition (TREX) Program called Urban Animals, that will tour Alberta for three years, and published his next children’s book of the same name, Urban Animals. In 2015 World Of Boo opened in the BMO World of Creativity Children’s Gallery at the Art Gallery of Alberta. In 2015, a selection of his animal sculptures was included in the Banff Biennial. In 2012 Carter opened his own gallery, The Carter-Ryan Gallery, in Canmore Alberta. His work has been acquired into dozens of collections including Government of Alberta, City Of Edmonton, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Rogers Media, Syncrude, Shaw Art Collection, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
