ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Jonathan Dueck is an artist and an educator who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design (2002) and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary (2012). His career as an artist has revealed to him that teaching and creating art are very similar activities; as an artist he often seeks to collaborate with others in the creation of new ideas in order to expand his vision of the world and what is possible in it. As a teacher; learning is collaboration between the student, teacher and the community in the creation of knowledge. Dueck’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States. His project IN TRANSIT: A Portable Gallery (2000), which existed inside a small red suitcase, expanded into a web-based “school” called the IN TRANSIT Centre for Creative Observation (2003). IN TRANSIT has presented collaborative performances and invited participants to complete monthly assignments posted on the web page. Dueck’s strong background in contemporary visual art, graphic design and technology has also given him the opportunity to lead the Design Studies program at Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary (2012-2013), where he taught grade 10 graphic design and the grade 10 Innovative Technologies program. Outside of his teaching experience, Dueck has coached gymnastics and mountain biking, instructed homeschooled children, worked with special needs adults at Calgary’s Studio C, and worked in Burkina Faso (West Africa) in a local school. These experiences have taught him valuable lessons about student engagement, diversity, and teaching with compassion for the person. His travels through Europe, Morocco, and West Africa have enlarged his perspective of the world and have made real the great importance of education on the success of future generations.
