| OTHER HOLDINGS: | Caldwell, Alexander | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Raised in Edmonton, Alberta, sculptor and functional furniture artist Alexander Caldwell was born in Whitehorse, Yukon in 1961. He attended the Alberta College of Art from 1981to 1985, and in 1984, received the James Scott Sculpture Award. In addition to founding Alexander Caldwell Design Ltd. in 1996, he has turned a 5000 square foot warehouse into his own art fabrication studio and bronze foundry – one of the largest foundries in Canada.
With one foot planted firmly in minimalist philosophy, this life-long collector has a deep respect for the found material he uses and for the environment in which he and they exist. Aluminum, steel, bronze and cast glass are used to explore shape and colour and create sculpture and functional art that have both movement and stability. Alexander is also considered one of Calgary’s premiere designers of furniture.
Alexander’s work has been shown in exhibitions, galleries and art fairs in Banff, Calgary, Vancouver, Chicago, Switzerland, Miami Beach, and Scotland. His works are held in private and public collections throughout the world, including the Nickel Arts Museum, EnCana/Cenovus, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Disney Tokyo, W Hotel in Korea and Canada Pacific. He has also appeared as a guest speaker at the Alberta College of Art + Design and the Faculty of Architecture/Fine Art at the University of Calgary.
